WOMEN IN RADIO – HEDY LAMARR -  ANTIQUE WIRELESS MUSEUM

2015-04-08 - On Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 7 pm, the Antique Wireless Museum will sponsor the second of its Women in Radio series.

Guests will be treated to some of Hedy Lamarr’s most memorable moments.  Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian and American inventor and film actress. After an early and brief film career in Germany, she fled her husband and secretly moved to Paris.
During her film career, Lamarr co-invented the technology for spread spectrum and frequency hopping communications with composer George Antheil. This new technology became important to America's military during World War II because it was used in controlling torpedoes. Those inventions have more recently been incorporated into WiFi, CDMA and Bluetooth technology, and led to her being inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.

Hollywood history expert Kay Noske will present highlights of Lamarr’s Hollywood career as well her little known significant technology inventions. This fascinating program will begin at 7 pm at the Museum, 6925 State Route 5, Bloomfield, New York 14469.

Museum Phase II Fundraising Initiated

2014-12-16 - Indiegogo fundraising effort has been initiated to support the AWA Museum's Phase II expansion efforts.  A key component of that expansion will be a 250,000 watt from the Voice of America's Delano Station.
After nearly 6 decades of service to freedom, the Delano California Voice of America was scheduled to be sold for scrap.  Just as happened to the dinosaurs, extinction was eminent.  As a tribute to the legacy of the VOA as the “world’s Voice of Freedom”, the AWA in alliance with the Collins Collectors Association has rescued the station control room and one of the 250,000 watt transmitters for a unique display in the Antique Wireless Museum in Bloomfield, New York.

The Museum, now in its 62nd year, has an amazing artifact of communication history to display and with it, an awesome responsibility to tell the powerful VoA story of its history and continuing positive impact on freedom throughout our world.  In addition, the VoA display and other Museum improvements will provide enhanced opportunities for AWA to present science related programming via our developing STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) initiatives.

It will cost $404,100 to complete the next phase of the Museum including the new VOA display.
Please consider a donation, no matter the size, to support our efforts.  Click on the https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/awa-museum-voice-of-america-250-kw-station-display link to donate.

The Holloway House, 29 State Street in Bloomfield, NY will be transformed into a studio from the Golden Age of Radio and, following dinner, guests will be treated to some of the late Agnes Moorehead’s most memorable moments. Moorehead may be best remembered as Endora (Elizabeth Montgomery’s mother) in the TV series Bewitched. However, Moorehead was also an early radio pioneer, originally with Orson Welles' Mercury Theater. She became known as "The Queen of Suspense" and is a 2014 inductee into the Radio Hall of Fame. Hollywood history expert Kay Noske will present highlights of Moorehead's illustrious radio and film career, dressed in era-appropriate costume..

NEWS FLASH

2014-06-25 - Largest Collins Radio AM Shortwave transmitter saved from extinction. – The development of satellite communication, the internet and social media over the last 4 decades has dramatically changed the way information is disseminated around our globe. The fate of many of the grand high power AM shortwave transmitters of the mid-20th century has followed the fate of the dinosaurs. Extinction is eminent.

The recent turnover of the large Voice of America broadcasting station in Delano California to the General Services Administration (GSA) for disposal potentially sealed the fate of the last compete Collins 250,000 watt ( 1 Megawatt PEP) Model 821A-1 HF Autotune transmitters in the world.

In February of this year the Collins Collectors Association and the Antique Wireless Association formalized an alliance that had been functioning effectively for over a year. This alliance, the Collins Radio Heritage Group (CRHG) – working also in cooperation with members of the Arthur A. Collins Legacy Association (AACLA) in Cedar Rapids, had been raising money and supporting archival efforts related to the history of Collins and Rockwell Collins.

Hearing of the potential loss of the last of the Model 821A-1 megawatt level transmitters, the CRHG (the CCA and the AWA) – working in cooperation with members of the AACLA – went to work to save some of the significant historical artifacts related to the VOA transmitter site in Delano.

In December of last year, a proposal was submitted to the VOA and the GSA to recover, preserve and display one Collins Model 821A-1 250,000 watt transmitter and the Analog Studio Control board from the Delano site prior to its planned destruction. In May of this year, that proposal was approved and recovery began.

We are proud to announce that the recovery is now complete, and that the transmitter, the studio board, associated remote controls and studio and site ambiance have been removed from Delano and shipped to the AWA Museum in Bloomfield New York where they will be displayed.

It is noteworthy that this transmitter, as installed, weighed in at over 22 tons, stood over 20 feet tall, occupied two rooms (three counting the remotes in the studio) totaling over 1000 sq. ft. and that the studio equipment occupied another approximately 400 sq. ft. The 4CV100000C vapor phase cooled PA and modulator tubes weigh in at 95 pounds each. Plate and modulation transformers weigh in the range of 4-6000 pounds apiece!

The future vision includes coordinated displays in both Bloomfield, NY and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, streaming video and audio linked to these displays, and to the CRHG website. The presentation of this beautiful piece of engineering will serve as a tribute to the VOA, the Collins Radio technologies and the people who made it happen.

The first several chapters of a great story can now be shared. You can now come along and share the ride as we write the final chapters and build out the displays that will present these artifacts and stories for your enjoyment.

Stay tuned here and in the CCA Signal Magazine for future developments. This project is like an iceberg and you are just seeing the tip. If you would like to help, please contact one of the people below.

Summer 2014 AWA Gateway Released

2014-08-11 - The Summer edition of The AWA Gateway is now available for viewing on the AWA web site here. With this issue we begin a new series "Collecting Radio Peripherals," which will cover the parts, literature and accessories needed by every serious radio collector and restorer. Part 1 focuses on radio servicing literature, especially the indispensable manuals by John Rider. The “Play it Again” series concludes with an overview of a systematic method for troubleshooting the circuitry of a.c.-powered receivers, and this installment of the recently  introduced “Communications History at the AWA Museum” series describes the remarkable radio inventions of Edwin Armstrong. Also included is a history of Scott Radio in “Company Chronicles,” a discussion of classic kid's adventure programs of the 30s and 40s in “Enjoying Antique Radio,” and a review of David Rutland's "Behind the Front Panel." Finally our “Radio Reflections” series discusses radio developments during the latter part of the 1920s.

AWA Journal Status

2013-11-15 - The Autumn Journal was mailed out last Thursday, November 7th, its lateness caused primarily because I have been the sole caregiver during my wife’s difficult recovery from knee replacement surgery.  As usual we mailed using the non-profit organization rate, so it will be awhile before it reaches all of your mailboxes.

In the meantime, I’m trying to get the Winter Journal back on the time line that was originally established for last Summer's issue — which we mailed about three weeks early in order to give members plenty of time to make plans for the convention. And so the contributors’ deadlines remain as established then — which for the Winter Journal issue is about 10 days from now November 25th).

AWA Review Editor to Continue

The following is a message from Bob Murray, AWA Review Editor

I resigned last year as Editor of the AWA Review and the AWA put some effort into searching for a successor. The search came up empty, and the AWA then asked me to continue as Editor. They agreed to direct additional resources in support of this role. I want to notify AWA members therefore, that manuscripts for the Review should be submitted to my address as usual. The address is located on the inside cover of this Journal. I will be pleased to receive your articles.
