Event Details for Amplitude Modulation QSO Party

2019 AM QSO Party
By Janis-AB2RA

Date:  Saturday February 16, 2019 @ 2300 GMT to Sunday February 17, 2019 @ 2300 GMT

Bands:  160, 80, 40 and 20 Meters

Objective: To promote and encourage the use of AM as a mode of operation in ham radio and to have fun.  Let’s show the Amateur Radio Community that AM is alive and well! This will be your best chance to hear a wide variety of vintage gear and talk to some of the friendliest people on the air.  While use of older tube gear is encouraged, we also want to welcome people using modern solid state gear as well.

Frequencies: Around 1.885 or 1.945, 3.835 – 3.890, 7.280 – 7.295, 14.275 – 14.295 and 14.340

West coast stations may want to try 7.160.
Exchange: Name, state, (province, or country).  That keeps the log simple, but don't be afraid to talk about your station, or to ask about another station.   This event is about fun, above all.   Be friendly to new AM stations and help those with transceivers get active on AM.  Even if you only make a few contacts, please send in a log so that we will know who is participating and we can track the frequencies and locations that are used.

Scoring and Multipliers: Stations producing 25 watts or less carrier OUTPUT, each contact counts as 3 points. Stations producing 25-100 watts carrier OUTPUT, each contact counts as 2 points.   Stations with more than 100 watts out count as 1 point.   All 20 meter contacts count 5 points regardless of power output.   You may contact each station only once per band.
Flagship Stations: There will be two authorized flagship stations participating in the AM QSO Party this year operating as W2AN.  Serving as the AWA Midwest Flagship station will be Ron- W8ACR operating from Nebraska.  Serving as our Eastern Flagship station will be AL – W1VTP.  Both of these stations are long time AM operators with some great vintage and homebrew gear.  These two stations will not be included in the final standings.   Their scores will be listed separately in the results.  The first contact with each flagship station counts 10 points, all subsequent contacts with that station are 1 point. You might work a flagship station on another band, but any subsequent contacts are scored as 1 point, except for 20 meters.

This year, there is a possibility that you may hear W2ICE on the air operating from the AWA Museum.
Logs: There is a summary log sheet posted on the AWA web site.  It is not necessary to send your entire log, only the summary sheet is desired.   Even if you only make a few contacts, please send in a log sheet so you can be counted as a participant.   Also, please send in via email pictures of the station(s) you used and any comments you may have.  For those without web access, send a note to AB2RA Janis Carson, at: 61 Rothermich Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850-9323 and a copy will be mail to you.

Paper logs must be postmarked no later than March 9th and sent to: AB2RA Janis Carson at 61 Rothermich Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850-9323, or send by email to: AB2RA [at] htva [dot] net.

Winners will be notified and listed in the AWA Journal and Website along with Electric Radio.

Station Example

Picture
This is the station that Joe-W3GMS is considering using during the AWA AM QSO Party.  It’s a memorial station that I created in my museum, to honor my mentor, Harry I. Davis – W3FDY (SK).  The Johnson 500 is not low power, so I may switch to a lower power rig for this year’s event.
